As now had become customary the first championship to open up the local season is that sponsored by the Assikura Insurance Brokers reserved for Gold and Bronze categories over the 2140m distance.

The Bronze Category went into action first on Sunday 2nd February after which the qualified horses raced in the semi finals on Sunday 16th February so that the 12 finalist horses will be racing in the final next Sunday.

The Gold category raced their heats on 9th and 10th February in which 91 horses raced in 8 heats meaning two extra heats than last year as there were 25 more horses. The three semi finals were raced last Sunday so that the 12 finalists were made known and today the owners themselves drew the starting numbers behind the autostart.

The press conference was addressed by the Chairman of the Malta Racing Club Edwin Borg as well as the Managing Director of Assikura Insurance Brokers Andrew Grech.
