Calleja Dominates 1st Day of World Championship for Amateur Drivers

It was definitely a memorable day for Maltese horse racing as well as Cliferty Calleja when during the first day of the World Championship for Amateur Drivers at the Capannelle Racetrack in Rome, he dominated with two victories thus heading the overall classification.

In his first encounter he drove a perfect race to get a victory with outsider Zorko whilst his second victory with Zucchero Jet was due to a tactical decision of giving the lead to the favourite and calmly snatching the victory in the last metres. During the presentation a visibly emotional Calleja said that he had never dreamt of winning both races in the first day of the competition.

Whilst the contingent now travels to Torino, Malta is first with maximum 18 points followed by Argentina with 12 points whilst the current World and European champion Belgian Piet Van Pollaert is in third place with 11 points.
