World Championship for Amateur Drivers

During this week Italy will be hosting the World Championship for Amateur Drivers in which Malta will be making its first ever participation. Our representative is Cliferty Calleja who early this morning left Malta together with Malta Racing Club’s and EquestriMalta’s vice chairman Mr Edwin Borg. Calleja has 6 races to drive at three different tracks together with drivers from Argentina, Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, The Netherlands, United States and the reigning World and European amateur champion Piet Van Pollaert from Belgium. The races will be held on Wednesday 21st, Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th September at Capannelle Rome, Vinovo Torino and Visarno Florence.

This championship dates back to 1972 with the last edition being held in the USA in 2020.

Cliferty Calleja has been licenced with the Malta Racing Club since November 2001 when he also took his first victory. Since then he has driven over 1800 races with 185 victories eleven of them this year yet his best season so far was 2021 when he took a total of 23 wins.

This will be the second time that Calleja will be representing Malta in an international competition as in January 2014 he had taken part in the Coupe Europeen des Amateurs at the Vincennes racestrack in Paris.
