Johnnie Walker Cup Final

Details pertaining to the Johnnie Walker Cup Final were given this afternoon during a press conference at the Malta Racing Club Board Room. During this same press conference the owners of the 12 finalist horses drew the numbers that determine the starting position behind the autostart for their horses.

This press conference was addressed by the Chairman of the Malta Racing Club Edwin Borg together with the Marketing Manager of M.Demajo Wines & Spirits Ltd Alfred Braddick.

Edwin Borg said that this is the 7th consecutive year that M.Demajo Wines & Spirits Ltd were sponsoring this Johnnie Walker Cup and like the past five years it is open for Gold Category horses. This prestigious trophy is celebrating its 80 years anniversary from the year it was launched way back in 1939.

68 horses took part in 7 heats raced on Friday 4th and Sunday 6th October with 28 horses qualifying for the three semi finals which were raced yesterday.  Twelve horses emerged from these three highly competitive races. Unfortunately one horse was scratched prior to the draws meaning that eleven horses will challenge each other in the Final on Sunday 3rd November.

Alfred Braddick said that every year he waits earnestly for this final which offers a spectacle and entertaining afternoon not only to those horse racing enthusiasts who normally frequent the racetrack but also to the guests of M.Demajo Wines & Spirits Ltd who are invited to assist to this final with them. He took the opportunity to wish a great race to all owners and drivers in this year’s final whilst he also promised that as next year will be the 200 anniversary for Johnnie Walker, then the championship will be organised in a more special way.

A total of €1600 will be distributed in prize money between the first four finishers together with trophies. A commemorative horse blanket will also be awarded to the winner. Apart from this to help the owners celebrate, M.Demajo Wines & Spirits will be giving the first four finishers bottles of their renowned whiskey. The winner will get a Johnnie Walker Blue Label, the runner up will get a Johnnie Walker 18 year old, a Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve will be given to the third placed whilst for the fourth placed there is a Johnnie Walker Green Label.
